G6PD Screening
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase screening detects enzyme deficiency that predisposes to haemolytic anaemia after certain drugs, infection or foods.
Why a doctor may order this
To screen for G6PD deficiency before oxidant drugs or in unexplained haemolysis.
Why you may need this
Important before certain medicines (e.g. primaquine, some antibiotics) or if you had sudden jaundice/haemolysis after infection or drugs — especially in males of certain ethnic backgrounds.
